while a docent spoke about her epxeriences with these sea creatures as well as facts about how they live, eat, etc. The museum had a guest speaker, a scientist/researcher who explained how lobsters are caught and other interesting facts and the discovery room allowed adults and kids to touch sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, sea-cucumbers, etc.
It is a great place to educate your kids about a life of lobsters. At the hatchery the 'scientists' showed us live female lobsters and how they store their eggs (very interesting) and hot the eggs hatch. The Mount Desert Island Oceanarium offers youngsters and families an excellent opportunity to learn about Bar Harbors ecology in a fun, interactive way. This small yet intriguing museum is unique. Mind you, the buildings were working research centers out in the field so to speak, things were messy, a bit dirty and going on all around. The highlight of the visit was the hatchery itself. One plan is to see the lobster hatchery, lobster museum and discovery room and the other option is to add on the nature walk on a trail. So think of a carnival-type atmosphere and all the various family-related fun that goes with it. There are various areas to see and two different plans. The mission of the Oceanarium is to bring a small piece of this exotic world to the surface so. The visit takes about 1.5 hours to 2 hours complete. At first it looks like a run-down, rustic camp, but once inside the main entrance/gift shop, there is alot to see.
The price was $27 for two adults, but it was so worth it.
The oceanarium is family friendly, so I would suggest that couples go as early as possible to avoid the child rush. So this little hands-on discovery museum on the way to Bar Harbor (which is a bit obsure) was a delight! We were so glad we decided to stop and pay the place a visit.
